Plateau State Polytechnic student jailed for rape.

A student of the Plateau State Polytechnic, Musa Nyam, will be behind bars for the next 48 months following his conviction by a Jos upper Area court over an alleged rape.

An Upper Area Court sitting in Kasuwan Nama gave the verdict on Friday after Nyam pleaded guilty to the charge of raping of a 23 year old girl whom he had invited to a birthday party. The police prosecutor Ibrahim Gokwat had earlier told the court that the plaintiff had reported a case of rape on the 18th October at the Nasarawa -Gwom Police station, where the case was later transferred to the state CID.

Ibrahim stressed that,  the defendant had invited the plaintiff for a birthday celebration in his house where he overpowered her without her consent and this contravened section 283 of the Penal Code act.

Judge, Yahaya Mohammed, who had rejected the convict’s plea for mercy and slammed four years imprisonment on him without an option of fine said: “The sentence will serve as a deterrent to others.” Citing Section 157 of the Criminal Code as the punishment section.

The young man Musa Nyam will surely miss out on school for the next four years to come.
