Gombe State Governor Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya has announced a groundbreaking plan to establish a 30-hectare ultra-modern abattoir and international livestock market, a move hailed by stakeholders as a game-changer for the state’s livestock sector.
The project, initiated under the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) Project, aims to modernize livestock management and drive economic growth in the state.
At a presentation held at the L-PRES office in Gombe, the State Coordinator, Professor Usman Bello Abubakar, unveiled the detailed site plan. He emphasized the government’s commitment to inclusivity, stating that Governor Yahaya had directed the team to engage stakeholders to ensure the project aligns with their needs.
Professor Abubakar highlighted the untapped potential of the livestock sector and its economic importance. “Livestock has been overshadowed by crop production for too long. This project represents a paradigm shift to transform Gombe into a hub for livestock production and export,” he said.
The initiative combines modern technology and innovative strategies to optimize livestock production and align with global standards. Key components include meat processing, leather production, and exporting high-value products to international markets.
Spanning 39 hectares, the proposed site will feature:
Livestock Markets, Allocating 5 hectares for cattle, 3 hectares for sheep and goats, and 2 hectares for poultry in a Modern Abattoir 4-hectare facility equipped with advanced cooling systems, water supply, storage units, and a tannery for leather production.
Support Infrastructure to include, Veterinary clinics, stock feed markets, waste treatment facilities, a motel, a fire station, and a police station.
The project will adopt successful models from other regions, such as tanneries in Kano, to position Gombe as a leader in leather production and export.
Professor Abubakar also noted that the initiative prioritizes job creation for Gombe State residents, offering opportunities in the livestock market, abattoir, and related industries. The ripple effects are expected to stimulate economic resilience and growth across the state.
Representatives from livestock associations, including Sheep and Goat Marketers, Poultry Sellers, and Butchers, commended the government’s efforts. They also suggested expanding the cattle market to meet increasing demand.
“Governor Yahaya’s vision is commendable. This project is set to revolutionize our industry and improve livelihoods,” said a stakeholder during the interactive session.
