The 1997 alumni of Government Comprehensive Day Secondary School (GCDSS), Gombe, have donated a brand-new laptop to their alma mater during the 6th Annual General Meeting (AGM) organized by the Old Students Association.

At the event, the alumni reiterated their commitment to enhancing the school’s infrastructure and educational resources. Planned projects include the renovation of classrooms and the school’s large hall, which can accommodate over 1,000 students for examinations.

The association has set December 26 as the fixed date for their annual meetings, where they deliberate on initiatives to improve the school and provide assistance to less-privileged members. In the previous AGM, the 1997 set addressed a critical furniture shortage by equipping the staffroom with chairs and tables.

Among their future initiatives is the establishment of an Information and Communications Technology (ICT) center. This project, spearheaded by Hon. Gambo Manzo, a former political aide to an ex-president, has already received federal government approval. Delivery of the necessary equipment is expected soon.

Speaking at the meeting, the school’s principal, Muhammad Musa Muhammad, expressed appreciation for the alumni’s continued support but also outlined the school’s pressing challenges.

“Our school currently has only one functional toilet and no water supply,” he stated. “Additionally, some classrooms lack windows and doors. Despite these issues, I am determined to improve the school’s standard, leveraging the dedication of our over 70 staff members, including NYSC corps members.”

The principal also called for a computerized system to manage student records, emphasizing the need for further technological advancement in the school.

The chairman of the 1997 set, Suleiman Sambo Adamu, popularly known as “Sule Bobo,” commended members for their dedication and timely contributions. He highlighted the need for continued intervention, noting that GCDSS is still lagging behind other schools in the state.

“We are proud of our roots and are committed to ensuring the school reaches its full potential,” Suleiman remarked.

The association resolved to prioritize the renovation and furnishing of the school’s large hall as their next major project, underscoring their determination to improve the learning environment and support future generations of students.

This latest gesture reflects the strong commitment of GCDSS alumni to the development of their alma mater and the empowerment of its students.
