In a heartfelt appeal on World Children’s Day, primary school pupils in Gombe State have called on the government to prioritize free education for vulnerable children and those with disabilities, as well as provide free school buses to ease transportation difficulties.

Wisdom Peter, a pupil from Excel Bright Academy Gombe, spoke on behalf of his fellow students during the event, presenting their demands to the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Asma’u Muhammad Iganus.

Among the key requests were the provision of free education, better access to books, well-equipped libraries, and swift action on the Child Rights Act Bill currently before the State Assembly.

The pupils also highlighted the need for more attention to the challenges faced by children with disabilities.

In her response, Commissioner Asma’u Muhammad Iganus assured the pupils that their concerns would be communicated to Governor Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya. She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing the issues impacting children in the state.

“I will ensure your voices are heard by His Excellency, the Governor, and provide him with a full explanation of your requests,” she promised.

On the issue of free education for vulnerable children and those with disabilities, the Commissioner expressed her ministry’s readiness to collaborate with the Ministry of Education to explore feasible solutions.

While acknowledging the current economic challenges, she assured the pupils that the government would consider the proposal for free transportation. “Providing free buses will significantly help less-privileged pupils attend school regularly,” she emphasized.

The Commissioner also expressed optimism about the passage of the Child Rights Act Bill, affirming the government’s commitment to protecting children’s rights across Gombe State.
