By Rabilu Abubakar, Gombe

The Centre for the Study and Resolution of Domestic Violence (CERSDOV) recently conducted a three-day training program for 24 women from diverse groups across Gombe State’s 11 local government areas. The training focused on raising awareness and enhancing advocacy on Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights.

The initiative is aimed at equipping women-led organizations with effective advocacy tools and methods related to sexual and reproductive health rights, child marriage, gender-based violence (GBV), and gender equality.

In her opening remarks, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Asma’u Iganus, encouraged participants to make the most of the training, noting that they were chosen to learn and then extend this knowledge to the grassroots level.

She appreciated CERSDOV’s collaboration with the Gombe State government, recognizing the positive impact this would have on local women’s empowerment.

The Director of CERSDOV, Professor Hauwa Evelyn Yusuf, provided further context, explaining that the training is part of efforts to support women in recognizing and protecting their rights.

Represented by Mrs. Safiya Gatama Johnson, Professor Yusuf emphasized that the training would empower participants to understand their sexual and reproductive health rights, as well as the tools necessary to advocate effectively.

The issue of early child marriage, a key topic of concern, was also addressed. The Centre noted that early marriage can sometimes lead to gender-based violence, making it a critical area for discussion during the training. Professor Yusuf stressed the importance of these sessions for promoting gender equality and safeguarding women’s rights in Gombe.
