The Bauchi State Commissioner for Agriculture, Prof. Simon Yalam, praised women farmers for their efforts in ensuring food security despite challenges.
Yalam stated this at the World Food Day celebration 2024, with the theme: “Right to Food for a Better Life and a Better Future” on Thursday in Bauchi.
Organized by Fahimta Women and Youth Development Initiative (FAWOYDI) in collaboration with the State Ministry of Agriculture, Smallholder Women Farmers of Nigeria (SWOFON) and Budget Committee (BCG).
He emphasized the need for food security and encouraged farmers not to relent.
“I commend the resilience of our women farmers in ensuring food security despite numerous challenges.
“We’re committed to supporting them through initiatives like employing female extension workers and creating budget lines specifically for women farmers,” he said.
Mr Mustapha Idris, FAWOYDI representative, Said “We’re thrilled to partner with the Bauchi State Government and other stakeholders to promote food security.
World Food Day celebrations underscore the importance of collective action in achieving sustainable food systems.
On her part, Hajiya Marka Abass, SWOFON National PRO, said We appreciate the Commissioner’s commitments.
“But we urge the Ministry of Agriculture to provide more resources and support for women farmers.
“This will significantly enhance agricultural productivity and food security.” Abass said.
She added that empowering women farmers is crucial for sustainable agricultural growth.
“I commend FAWOYDI and partners for their tireless efforts.” he said
Earlier, Mrs Fatima Usman, SWOFON State Coordinator, in her Charter of demand, outlines critical needs of women farmers.
“We’re optimistic that the state government will address these issues, ensuring inclusive and sustainable agricultural growth.”
Hajiya Aisha Mohammed, Women Farmer said “We’re grateful for the recognition and support.
“As women farmers, we face unique challenges. These initiatives will empower us to contribute more significantly to Bauchi State’s food security.” She said,
Part of the event includes an exhibition of farm produce such as rice, beans, soya beans, groundnut and other staple crops.
