There’s No Hiding Place for Unregistered Commercial Vehicles in Abuja Starting 2025

In a landmark decision poised to redefine transport security in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has unveiled a new directive targeting all commercial vehicles operating within the city.

Taking to social media, Nigerian Stories broke the news on its official X handle, sharing the minister’s bold announcement.

Starting January 2025, all commercial buses in Abuja must undergo a rigorous profiling process by the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS). This measure aims to bolster public safety, improve vehicle identification, and reduce criminal activity associated with unregulated vehicles in the bustling capital.

Minister Wike emphasized the significance of this move, explaining that enhanced vehicle profiling is vital in achieving a more secure and orderly transportation network across Abuja. “We cannot afford to have unidentified and unmonitored vehicles operating freely in the FCT. This step will create a safer environment and help authorities swiftly respond to incidents and crime,” Wike remarked.

This new initiative mandates that every commercial bus operator complies with the profiling procedure to avoid penalties or removal from service. The profiling process will require vehicle owners to register detailed information, including the driver’s credentials, vehicle specifications, and operational routes.

Transportation stakeholders, security analysts, and Abuja residents have responded with a mix of support and curiosity. While some hail the initiative as a much-needed modernization of the city’s transport system, others call for clarification on the process, questioning the potential impacts on small-scale operators and overall commuting costs.

Minister Wike assured the public that efforts are underway to make the profiling process as seamless as possible, with clear guidelines set to roll out by late 2024. The FCT Administration aims to provide sufficient time for transport operators to comply with the directive and plans to work closely with relevant agencies to ensure a smooth transition.

As Abuja gears up for this shift, residents and commuters are encouraged to stay informed about the changes and prepare for a new era in public transportation.
