Hajiya Jamila Jafaru Leko, wife of House of Representative Member Hon. Jafaru Gambo Leko, has launched an initiative to support pregnant women and schoolgirls in Bogoro, Dass, and Tafawa Balewa Federal Constituency.
Jamila Leko, while speaking at the inauguration of the distribution in Bogoro on Thursday, said the initiative is part of the efforts to improve child birth and hygiene in the constituents.
She said the initiative involves the distribution of delivery kits, blankets, and mosquito nets to pregnant women, as well as sanitary pads to schoolgirls in selected secondary schools across the three local government areas.
Mrs Leko emphasized the significance of the delivery kits, highlighting how they can prevent infections and complications during childbirth.
“Many women in our community lack access to basic healthcare, leading to unnecessary maternal and infant mortality. These kits will provide essential items for safe childbirth.” She said.
Jamila Leko said the distribution of blankets and mosquito nets aims to provide comfort and protection from malaria, a significant threat to pregnant women and newborns in the region.
“Malaria is a leading cause of maternal and infant mortality. These mosquito nets will help prevent malaria transmission.”
Leko also distributed sanitary pads to schoolgirls, addressing a critical concern in many Nigerian communities.
“Menstrual hygiene management is essential for girls’ education and dignity. By providing sanitary pads, we’re helping them stay in school, reducing absenteeism and dropout rates.” Leko’s wife said.
“We’re grateful for Hajiya Jamila’s kindness,” said Mary Yusuf a pregnant woman who received a delivery kit.
“These items will help us have a safe and healthy childbirth.” She said
A community leader Mr Bitrus Gobiya, added, “This initiative demonstrates Hajiya Jamila’s commitment to our community’s well-being. We appreciate her efforts to improve maternal and child health.”
