FG Congratulates, Ethiopia, Benin Republic, DR Congo & Gambia As Members Elected Into UNHRC

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to congratulate the Republic of Benin, Democratic Republic of Congo, The Gambia and the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia on their election by the United Nations General Assembly on 9 October, 2024, to the UN Human Rights Council.

The UN Human Rights Council is an agency of profound importance, especially in these difficult times. To this end, the Federal Republic of Nigeria is committed to the upholding of the tenets of human rights and the rules-based international order.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs notes the critical value that a free press plays in the support of human rights and democracy. It is therefore important to convey that, contrary to some reports, it is a matter of public record that Nigeria did not present a candidate for admission to the Council on this occasion.

Nigeria offered our full support to the two West African states that will join the Council in January, 2025 up until 2027. We will continue to work with the Council and other international, regional and national organizations in their vital work in pursuit of inalienable fundamental human rights.
