A non-governmental organization, the Association for Orphans and Vulnerable Children in Nigeria, Bauchi State Chapter in Collaboration with the Nigerian Women Trust Fund (NWTF) have called on the government at all levels to ensure adequate protective space for women and girls against violence.
They made the call during advocacy visits to various organs of government which comprises the Ministry of Women Affairs and Child Development, Ministry of Justice, Social Welfare Department of Bauchi and Dass LGAs) on Friday.
The Group urged government authorities to provide safe spaces for victims of violence by enforcement of laws to forestall a recurrence and stigmatization against women and girls.
Mrs Elizabeth Rike James, Program Officer AONN/NWTF, said the objective of the advocacy was to foster a comprehensive understanding of women’s leadership and inclusion as well as promote their positive impact across communities.
She also urged governments to enhance equal rights and there is a need to protect women’s rights and inclusion in leadership positions in the country.
James further urged non-governmental organizations to ensure continuous enlightenment of the populace, especially women to end all gender-based discrimination.
She added that governments should invest in protection services and give support to survivors of violence.
“They should allow them to speak up and ensure that women and girls with disabilities are included in its programmes.
“For the war against violence on women and girls in the state must be achieved, there must be safe spaces for the victims.
“Moving out of a violent environment by the victims of the acts was the first way to manage the phenomenon, urging government, churches and communities to establish safe spaces for the victims,” she said.
The Program Officer, however, appreciated the various Ministries and departments for allowing them to carry out the advocacy.
Responding, Mr Saleh Mammam, Permanent Secretary Ministry of Women Affairs, and Mr Ibrahim Saleh Bagas Deputy Director of Social Welfare, pledged to support the implementation of the project through their collaboration and partnership.
“As well ensure that women are prevented against the violation of their right, inclusion in decision making and also economically empowered to improve on their livelihood,” They Stressed.
