In a distressing incident, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has apprehended Saleh Idris, the 56-year-old chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Roni Local Government Area, on charges of raping his housegirl.
The spokesperson for the Jigawa State Command of NSCDC, CSC Adamu Shehu, confirmed the arrest through a statement released to the media outlet, DAILY POST.
As per the official account, the apprehension of Saleh Idris occurred on Wednesday following a complaint lodged by the victim’s brother.
The young girl, who was a 14-year-old house help at the suspect’s residence, allegedly fell victim to his actions and became pregnant as a result. According to the victim’s brother’s report, attempts were made to resolve the matter at the Hisba office, but no agreement was reached.
Instead, the suspect exerted pressure on the victim’s family to terminate the pregnancy. The victim’s brother states, “The case was reported at NSCDC Roni LGA Division after a failed agreement was reached at the Hisba office on taking responsibility. Instead, he was pressuring the family to abort the pregnancy.”
The initial encounter between the suspect and the young girl occurred when the suspect offered her a drink while his wife was not at home, causing her to lose consciousness. It was during this vulnerable state that he took advantage of her.
The suspect allegedly threatened her into silence, exploiting her fear by claiming that she would lose her monthly allowances if she disclosed the incidents.
The abuse continued without her telling anyone until pregnancy surfaced. Upon being questioned, Saleh Idris denied the allegations made against him. The case has since been taken to court for legal proceedings.
The charges brought against the suspect violate Section 3 of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act of Jigawa State. If found guilty, he will face the appropriate consequences as dictated by the law.
This serves as a solemn reminder of the importance of safeguarding the rights and well-being of the vulnerable members of our society.
