The former Emir of Kano State, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, has urged Nigerians to support the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)-driven cashless policy as a way of sanitizing the nation’s electoral process and growing the economy.
Sanusi stressed that the Nigeria is ripe for the policy which has been in the pipeline for over a decade with the overall benefits of enhancing the nation’s socio-economic growth and development.
According to the former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor; for the fact of reducing rigging and related criminal activities in this year’s election, “Nigerians should welcome this new policy as it will give them a chance to vote whom they like, not those who can hire thugs or buy votes during elections”.
Mallam Sanusi, who stated his position in a social media post on Monday, said people should be careful as not to become victims of the manipulations of politicians who are currently hurting because of the Naira swap policy.
He said this while Noting that the policy was not new, having been in the pipeline for over ten years, he said the politicians are now kicking and crying because their loots have been made useless and worthless ahead of the forthcoming polls.
“This policy (Naira redesign policy) has been under way for more than 10 years. And Nigeria is ripe for the policy since we have no other way of transaction apart from physical currency (bank notes or coins)”, the ex-banker said.
Explaining his thoughts that the politicians are seriously affected by the policy, Mallam Sanusi said; “In the past those with highest loots were the ones to rig their way to power. Now even if someone stashed some money, it useless as the notes have been changed.”
Furthermore, he said; “Nigerians should be careful with what politicians say. Politicians will suffer more from the policy not ordinary Nigerians.
“They spend four years looting public funds and torturing their people, yet when another election round comes, they bring the money to buy votes and security apparatus and INEC officials; and sponsor thugs to destabilize elections process.”
Pointedly, the former CBN Chief said; “The policy would reduce rigging and similar activities during election. If you want to give an INEC official, a police officer or a judge some money, send via banks where it can easily be identified.”
