Exclusive – MSS students of Maitama Model Secondary School Celebrated their graduation Walimah with Ophans in Kuje

Graduating students of the Model Secondary School Maitama have visited an Orphanage Al- Ansar Homes in the Kuje area of the FCT to celebrate their graduation at Walima.

The visit took place last week Thursday 18th August 2022.

The students who were mainly Muslims decided to divert their celebration to the orphanage after the principal of the school reportedly halted all sorts of celebrations in the school after some students allegedly vandalised school properties in the name of celebration.

While other students were going for Prom and another form of celebration to mark the end of their high school experience, these few students chose to do humanitarian services with the little resources they had gathered to bring succour to others.

ROTV24 I had an exclusive telephone interview with the principal of the school, Emagun Elizabeth Godwin (Mrs) the principal expressed delight in their kind gesture.

In her remarks, she said * I am very happy for what they have done and if at this young age they have the mind to think of the less privileged and that there are people in need then certainly we have leaders of tomorrow because this is an exemplary leadership quality”.

Meanwhile, the outgoing head girl of the school who lead the visit gave an insight into why they chose to go to the orphanage instead of the walima which was the initial arrangement.

She said:

“The class of 2022 of Model Secondary School Maitama’s Muslim Students Society had their Walimah at an orphanage in Kuje called Al-Ansar Home.”

This was because the Principal of the school had cancelled any events that may have been planned. The Principal cancelled it owing to the act of vandalism of some overly excited students. On the last day of the NECO exams which was also supposed to be the say of the sign out of the graduating students, some of the students took their excitement too far by going ahead to destroy the boards, and desks and spray painting the walls of the school and classes.

“The Principal was furious at this act of indiscipline and decided to cancel all events and celebrations that were to take place the following week at the spot. This list of events included the Walimah of the Muslim students of the school probing the MSS officials to approach the Principal and try and reach a compromise with her but the action proved unsuccessful”.

“And so a meeting was called, ideas were shared and a decision was made to visit an orphanage home to celebrate the Walimah.  Thus contributions were made both of money, food Items and the food itself that will be taken to the orphanage”.

“With some planning and a few bumps along the way, Great success was achieved and a bus was taken to Kuje to visit the orphans in Al- Ansar Home. It was a delightful day for all, students and orphans alike as everyone was all smiling at the end of the event”.

The students donated to  the orphan snacks, beverages and some writing materials.
