?The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a strong warning to Nigerians regarding the severe dangers of irregular migration, particularly through high-risk, unconventional pathways such as the Sahara Desert and Mediterranean Sea crossings on makeshift vessels.

The call was made by the Spokesperson of the Ministry, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, following a meeting with Mr. George Emmanuel, a Nigerian citizen who survived a harrowing journey across the Sahara and a subsequent boat capsizing in the Mediterranean that claimed 28 lives.

Commending Mr. Emmanuel for turning his ordeal into an active advocacy campaign against human smuggling, the Ministry reiterated the Federal Government’s deep concern over the tragic human toll, exploitation, and abuse associated with irregular migration routes.

?To address these ongoing challenges, the Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to tackling the root drivers of illegal migration by expanding domestic economic opportunities, fortifying border management, and dismantling human trafficking networks.

Furthermore, the Ministry emphasized Nigeria’s ongoing collaboration with international partners to promote safe and regular migration channels, while assuring that Nigerian Missions abroad remain dedicated to providing consular assistance, voluntary return support, and reintegration care for citizens in distress.

Reaffirming its commitment to public safety, the Ministry strongly urges all Nigerians, especially the youth, to remain vigilant, resist the deceptive claims of human traffickers, and avoid hazardous journeys that jeopardize their lives.
