Court Reserves Ruling on Emefiele’s Statements, Adjourns $4.5bn Fraud Trial to July 9

Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Special Offences Court in Ikeja, Lagos, has adjourned the alleged $4.5 billion fraud trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele, and his co-defendant, Henry Omoile, to July 9, 2026, for a ruling on the admissibility of Emefiele’s extra-judicial statements.

The defence argued the statements were obtained under torture and prolonged detention, making them involuntary and inadmissible, while the prosecution maintained they were made voluntarily in the presence of Emefiele’s lawyer and did not amount to confessions.

The court also granted Omoile leave to appeal an earlier ruling and scheduled October and November dates for the continuation of the substantive trial.
