House of Representatives Calls for Urgent Action on School Abductions, Seeks Security Reforms

The House of Representatives has called for the immediate rescue of at least 72 abducted schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo and Borno states, following the adoption of two motions sponsored by Hon. Olamijuwonlo Alao-Akala and Hon. Midala Usman Balami.

During the plenary session on Tuesday 2nd June in the floor of the house, Alao-Akala raised concerns over the kidnapping of over 30 pupils and teachers from three schools in Orire LGA, Oyo State, on May 16, 2025, and condemned the killing of teacher Michael Oyedokun while in captivity.

He blamed the rising insecurity on criminal groups operating around the Old Oyo National Park and urged the Federal Government to establish a military forward operating base in the area and implement security reforms, including state policing.

Meanwhile, Balami on his part highlighted the abduction of 42 schoolchildren in Askira-Uba LGA of Borno State and warned that repeated attacks on schools continue to threaten education, traumatize families, and discourage school attendance.

The House urged security agencies to take decisive action to rescue all abducted victims across the country and strengthen security around schools through improved intelligence and rapid-response systems, also to expand school protection initiatives, and implement a comprehensive Safe Schools Security Framework.

The motions were referred to the House Committees on Army, Police, and National Security and Intelligence for further action.

Lawmakers also observed a minute silence in honour of Michael Oyedokun, other victims of kidnapping and banditry, and security personnel who lost their lives in service.
