Nigeria and Japan have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation through expanded foreign direct investment, industrial development, technology transfer, and strategic energy partnerships as both nations celebrate 66 years of diplomatic relations.
?The commitment was reinforced during a high-level bilateral meeting in Abuja between Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and the Ambassador of Japan to Nigeria, Suzuki Hideo.
?During the meeting, Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu expressed appreciation for Japan’s enduring development assistance and called for immediate steps to translate existing bilateral agreements into measurable economic outcomes.
She emphasized the importance of implementing the resolutions of the 10th Nigeria–Japan Special Partnership Forum, held in Abuja on August 27, 2026, through structured programs and regular diplomatic consultations.
?A primary proposal presented by the minister was the establishment of a Nigeria–Japan Industrial and Investment Hub designed to accelerate business partnerships, drive industrial growth, facilitate technical expertise, and serve as a gateway to the broader African market. She requested the Japanese Embassy's collaboration in formulating an actionable roadmap to bring the hub to fruition.
?To further deepen economic integration, Nigeria urged greater involvement from the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) to connect Japanese investors with credible local businesses.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu advocated for joint ventures, skills transfer, and local content integration within Japanese manufacturing supply chains.
In the energy and resources sector, Nigeria welcomed Japanese interest in critical-mineral supply chains, encouraging capital deployment into gas development, solid minerals, clean energy solutions, and industrial decarbonization.
?The minister also acknowledged Japan’s development interventions through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) across infrastructure, education, agriculture, and healthcare.

She highlighted a new $10 million JICA-supported venture capital initiative executed in partnership with the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority to catalyze Nigeria's technology and startup ecosystem.
?On regional security and diplomatic relations, Nigeria commended Japan’s continued contribution to peacebuilding and humanitarian programs across West Africa while reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to regional stability via the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union. The minister also advocated for streamlined visa processes to support legitimate travel for business leaders, scholars, and tourists.
?In response, Ambassador Suzuki Hideo described Nigeria as a strategic African giant and reiterated Japan’s dedication to elevating commercial and diplomatic ties. He assured the Nigerian delegation that visa-related matters would be addressed expeditiously to facilitate seamless bilateral exchange.
