?The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has issued a comprehensive communique following its General Assembly held on Thursday, 1st October 2026, at the Abuja National Mosque.

Presided over by its President-General, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar, the Assembly brought together prominent traditional rulers, Chief Imams, scholars, and delegates nationwide under the theme “Nigerian Muslims and the Imperative of Nation-building.”

Alongside key administrative updates—including the expansion of the National Executive Committee and the adoption of the 2026 National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) report—the Council adopted resolutions addressing critical national, legal, and socio-religious issues.

?On faith and internal cohesion, the Council reiterated that Islam prohibits religious compulsion, calling on scholars to settle differences privately and urging Muslims to verify information before sharing to avoid character assassination.

Addressing national security, the NSCIA stated that insecurity impacts all citizens equally and refuted claims of targeted Christian genocide. It advocated for professional, well-funded security architecture reforms, including decentralized policing with strong constitutional safeguards.

Additionally, the Council urged the Federal Government to reduce food and transportation costs to ease economic hardship.

?Regarding rights and education, the Council condemned the denial of indigenous status to Igbo Muslims and demanded immediate compliance with Supreme Court rulings regarding hijab rights and campus mosque approvals.

Specifically, it called on the Rivers State Government and Rivers State University to implement the apex court's judgment on allowing a campus mosque, while criticizing the University of Ibadan, Obafemi Awolowo University, and the University of Lagos for attempting to bypass hijab rulings in their international schools.

The Assembly further emphasized integrating sound Islamic education with STEAM subjects, promoting moral guidance for youth, and supporting Muslims with physical challenges.

?Finally, the Council highlighted civic responsibility, encouraging Muslims to secure their National Identity Numbers and Permanent Voter Cards, support poverty reduction through Zakat and Waqf, and model ethical conduct in public life.

The Assembly formally celebrated Maryam Ibrahim Dan-Azumi for winning first prize at the King Abdulaziz International Qur’anic Competition in Makkah, and honored outgoing Secretary-General Prof. Is-haq O. Oloyede for his tenure as Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
