The Small Scale Women Farmers Organization in Nigeria (SWOFON) has taken a groundbreaking step towards promoting sustainable energy and community development.
With the support of UN Women, SWOFON has trained 100 community and religious leaders in Dass and Bauchi local government areas on the benefits of biogas systems for businesses and communities.
Hajiya Marka Abbas, National Public Relations Officer of SWOFON stated this at a town hall meeting with community leaders on awareness creation on biogas technology in Bauchi on Wednesday.
According to her, the training, which took place on Tuesday in Dass and Wednesday in Bauchi was aimed to promote sustainable energy.
She emphasized the urgent need to manage millions of tons of food, water, and animal waste.
“Biogas systems offer a cost-effective solution by recycling waste into renewable energy and soil products, displacing fossil fuels,” Abbas explained.
Abass explained that the initiative specifically aims to empower women in cooking and creating a healthy environment, reducing the stress of cooking.
“Our women will no longer struggle with fuelwood and charcoal, which are hazardous to their health,” Abbas noted.
The PRO commended UN Women, Bauchi State Government, and stakeholders for supporting this initiative.
“Their partnership has enabled us to reach out to community leaders and promote biogas technology,” Abbas acknowledged.
On his part, Mr. Hussaini Mohammed, Deputy Director of Agric Technical Services in state Ministry Agriculture highlighted the environmental benefits of biogas systems.
“Protection of air, water, and soil and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
“Creation of healthier soils with natural fertilizers, as well as prevention of nutrients from entering waterways,” he said
Mohammed stressed that the project demonstrates the commitment of SWOFON and UN Women to sustainable development, environmental conservation, and women’s empowerment in the State.
A community leader in Birshi ward Bauchi, Alhaji Lawal Ahmed said the training will have a ripple effect on the community, as leaders share their knowledge with others.
“We are committed to creating awareness and promoting sustainable practices,” he said.
