Dr. Shehu Zailani is a veterinary medicine expert at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University ATBU Bauchi warns of the persistent threat posed by rabies and emphasizes the crucial role of regular vaccination in preventing its spread.
Zailani gave the warning in an interview with newsmen to commemorate the 18th World Rabies Day on September 28, 2024 on Saturday in Bauchi.
He explains that rabies is a viral infection caused by the raptor virus, typically spread through infected dogs.
“Whenever an infected dog bites a human, that individual is at risk of contracting rabies.
“Rabies remains a significant public health concern, particularly due to its zoonotic potential.
“The virus can be transmitted through the bite or saliva of an infected dog, contaminating open wounds or mucous membranes.” Dr. Zailani said.
Dr. Zailani assures that rabies can be controlled through annual vaccination.
“Dog owners, regardless of whether they keep their dogs as pets, for hunting, or as guard dogs, should ensure their dogs are vaccinated regularly.” He said
Zailani urges individuals, organizations, and stakeholders to unite towards the goal of zero rabies deaths by 2030.
“Together, we can break the boundaries of rabies and protect both animals and humans from this deadly virus.” Zailani said.
