Chairman of Kwami local government area of Gombe State, Dr Ahmed Wali Doho, has urged farmers to refrain from encroaching on cattle routes, which often leads to clashes between farmers and herders, resulting in loss of lives.

Doho issued the warning during a press briefing at his office where he also cautioned herders against taking advantage of the situation to instigate conflicts.

He noted that the most vulnerable period for clashes is during harvest time.

The chairman appealed for peaceful coexistence, revealing that the local government has established a security committee to prevent and address potential clashes before they occur, thereby preventing the loss of innocent lives.

He emphasised that the committee would remain vigilant from now until the harvesting period.

Doho explained that Kwami’s proximity to the river basin makes it an ideal location for dry season farming, and encouraged farmers of the area to harness the potentials of the river basins and practise irrigation farming.

According to him, dry season farming is crucial for addressing food security in Nigeria.

He highlighted the benefits of irrigation farming over rain-fed farming, citing the success of farmers in cultivating various food crops.
