The Nigeria women right and empowerment network (NIWOREN) in collaboration with Attah Sisters Helping Hands foundation has partnered Secondary Schools on the need to increase awareness on the fight against Sexual gender-based violence in Gamawa local government area of Bauchi state.
Mrs Alfred Precious, Programme officer of NIWOREN during advocacy at government technical college Gamawa recently, said the essence was to continue to educate students in the fight against sexual gender-based violence in society.
She said awareness and advocacy to schools would make a tremendous impact In engaging the younger generation in vital conversations and awareness campaigns on the sexual gender-based violence menace.
Precious said the advocacy was supported by ActionAids Nigeria under the Women voice and leadership (WVL) Nigeria funded by Global Affairs Canada.
On his part Mr Friday Finance officer of the Network said that they got support to advocate for the elimination of the barriers holding citizens using various platforms to provide an opportunity for the Stakeholders and students, raise awareness, explore innovative solutions to create an atmosphere where everyone can live free from violence and discrimination.
According to him, we paid an advocacy visit to Government technical college Gamawa Government day secondary kogga community of Gamawa local government Area with 20 teachers in each of secondary schools including the principals to seek support and collaboration on SGBV issue.
“We conducted a focus group discussion with 20 stakeholder and 20 zauren mata women groups on SGBV, to gain the support of stakeholders for the sustainability of the project,” he said.
He advised the teachers and the students to report any attempt by anybody to harass them.adding that anyone whose conversation makes them uncomfortable, should be reported to a school authorities, or parents and guardians.
A participant also a woman leader in Gamawa Community Mrs Halima Bako appreciated NIWOREN for taking this bold steps to create awareness on the fight against Sexual Gender Based Violence.
She pledged to mobilise other Community members for sustenance of the awareness campaign in the community.
Bako said the awareness would unite and guide Stakeholders and students to become agents of transformation through the power of knowledge sharing.
