An Elderstatesman and former Gubernatorial Candidate of defunct People’s Democratic Movement (PDM) in Bauchi Alhaji Ahmed Iliyasu has urged elected politicians to adhere to the doctrine of separation of powers to strengthen democracy in Nigeria.

Iliyasu made the call in an interview with our correspondent, on the role of politicians and political office holders’ responsibility in Bauchi.

He said that politicians needed to follow the doctrine strictly so as to strengthen democracy in the country.

He said that separation of powers was a constitutional doctrine practiced globally by most democratic governments

“The different arms of government Executives, Judiciary and legislature if they perform their administrative duties and responsibilities without undue interference would strengthen democracy.

“Therefore, elected officials should make sure they are restricted to their assigned responsibility and as well stick to their purview,” he said.

Iliyasu explained that those three arms of government have evolved in order that the goals and business of government may be achieved and carried out effectively.

“The legislature is the lawmaking body of the government. It is responsible for voting of money, approving of budget and carrying out oversight functions

“The executive arm of government is to carry out the general administration of the country. It is the most important organ due to the indispensable role it plays in the lives of citizens, ” he said.

The elder statesman also stressed that June 12 taught Nigerians a lesson, saying that the MKO Abiola election was credible

According to him, people voted for the mandate irrespective of religious and ethnic background.
