President of the senate Ahmad Ibrahim Lawal, has express happiness on the progress made in the dialogue between the federal cover and Accademic Staff Union of University (ASUU) to end the prolong strike action which have been on ground for over eight months now.
The Union had earlier agreed to call off the strike if they received the payment of the N70bln proposed by the government.
The senate leader in a post on Facebook said that the news is cheering.
Lawal wrote;
“It is a delight to read from the Twitter account of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), that the union has agreed to suspend its eight months old industrial action even as we await the official pronouncement from the executive of of the body”.
“The news of this agreement is a cheering one to every concerned persons, particularly the students who have wasted eight productive months at home doing virtually nothing. It is a relief to some of us too, who have dedicatedly intervened to bring the strike to an end”.
“When I led the Senate to meet separately and jointly with the parties on the 12th and 13th of Oct, I was emphatic that progress is being made as a result of our intervention and that in no distant time, both parties will reach a middle ground and bring our schools back to lifee”.
“I am therefore happy to see that our attempt at brokering an understanding between the Federal Government and the academic union by bringing them to a round table has yielded fruits”.
“Beyond this success of this agreement however, we must find a lasting solution to the perennial issues of strike actions especially in our educational institutions since the gap created as a result them does not do the students, parents, and the nation any good”.
“Both the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities at any time must reach agreements that are honest and realistic, and such agreements when reached must be implemented to the letters to prevent reoccurrence of this nature”.
“To the students who would be returning to schools as soon as they are opened, I urge you to take your studies seriously and do all that you can to cover up for the period that has been lost. God will be with you as you prepare to journey back to school”.
