?The Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Kingdom of Thailand have reaffirmed their commitment to expanding bilateral cooperation and deepening diplomatic relations following the inaugural Nigeria–Thailand Bilateral Consultations held on August 24, 2026, in Abuja.
Led by Ambassador Grema Garba of Nigeria's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Permanent Secretary Mrs. Sirilak Nyom of Thailand, the meeting operationalised a 2023 Memorandum of Understanding to boost economic, security, and technical partnerships.
?Both nations identified strategic trade opportunities, positioning Nigeria as a bridge to African markets and Thailand as a gateway to Southeast Asia. Key areas targeted for economic expansion include renewable energy, oil and gas, manufacturing, mining, healthcare, tourism, and ICT.
Agriculture was highlighted as a top priority, with Nigeria seeking Thai expertise and investment in rice production, cassava processing, aquaculture, and agricultural machinery.
?Discussions also addressed consular and migration issues, with Nigeria calling for more transparent, efficient, and predictable visa processing for its businesspersons, investors, students, and tourists.
On security, both sides agreed to step up joint efforts against transnational crime, including human trafficking, cybercrime, online scams, and illicit drug trade. Thailand proposed enhanced intelligence sharing using its SHIELD database and outlined a future Memorandum of Understanding on narcotics suppression with Nigeria's National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.
?Furthermore, technical collaboration will expand through the Thailand International Cooperation Agency, offering scholarships and training in climate resilience, digital technology, and food innovation.
Internationally, both countries reiterated their support for multilateralism, regional security, and comprehensive reform of the United Nations Security Council to grant equitable representation to Africa.
Thailand is set to host the second round of bilateral consultations in Bangkok on a mutually agreed date.
