?The Federal Government of Nigeria has successfully secured admission as an Association Country of the International Energy Agency (IEA), marking a major milestone that reinforces the nation’s leadership in global energy governance.
Formally communicated by IEA Executive Director Dr. Fatih Birol, Nigeria's admission was celebrated as the fastest accession process in the Agency’s 52-year history, a feat attributed to the country's strategic importance and reliability during recent global energy market disruptions.
Through this new status, Nigeria joins a elite framework that, together with 32 Member Countries and 13 Association Countries, commands roughly 75 percent of global energy demand, thereby amplifying Nigeria's voice in shaping international energy policies.
The partnership will deepen technical collaboration, policy dialogue, and data exchange, specifically supporting national priorities in energy access, affordability, and sustainability.
To solidify this achievement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced an upcoming visit by Dr. Birol to Abuja to sign a comprehensive Joint Work Programme that will replace the existing Memorandum of Understanding.
Expressing gratitude to the IEA Governing Board and the Nigerian Embassy in Paris for their coordinated efforts, the Federal Government reaffirmed Nigeria's ongoing commitment to accelerating sustainable energy development and strengthening partnerships that drive global prosperity.
