CBN Launches Nigeria Payments System Vision 2028: Targets Innovation, Financial Inclusion

The Central Bank of Nigeria has launched the Nigeria Payments System Vision 2028, a strategic roadmap aimed at accelerating innovation, deepening financial inclusion, and strengthening the country's digital economy.


A post on NTA handle on X formerly twitter revealed that the project was Unveiled in Abuja before banking executives, fintech operators, regulators, and development partners, the framework seeks to transform Nigeria into one of Africa's leading payment ecosystems.


The vision outlines key priorities including faster and more secure digital transactions, improved interoperability among payment platforms, expanded access to financial services, and stronger cybersecurity measures.


The CBN says the initiative will also support cross-border payments under the African Continental Free Trade Area, helping Nigerian businesses compete more effectively in regional and global markets.


Stakeholders believe the roadmap will boost confidence in digital payments, reduce transaction costs, and drive collaboration across the financial sector as Nigeria advances towards a more inclusive and cash-lite economy.
