Deputy Speaker Kalu Urges Igbo Leaders to Unite and Take Active Role in National Politics

?Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has called on Igbo elders, leaders, and stakeholders to unite, close ranks, and actively participate in Nigerian national politics to strengthen the region’s political influence and heritage.

Speaking on Friday at the South East Stakeholders' Convergence (SESC) in Owerri, Imo State, Kalu cautioned that disunity continues to weaken the political strength of Ndi Igbo across the South East region.

?Addressing the gathering, which was chaired by former Military Governor of Imo State and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Senator (Gen) Ike Nwachukwu (Rtd), Kalu emphasized that unity remains the foundation for socio-economic progress and peace in Igbo communities.

He praised the elders and stakeholders for setting aside personal engagements to attend the meeting, describing their presence as a demonstration of true patriotism and commitment to the development of Igbo land.

?Comparing leadership to a relay race, the Deputy Speaker noted that the younger generation is encouraged by the unified front shown by the elders as they prepare to pass the baton of leadership.

However, he warned that without cohesion, the region risks losing its political bearing and heritage.

?Highlighting Ndi Igbo’s standing in the nation's political landscape, Kalu stated that the region's voting strength is not fully reflected across the five South East states because many citizens reside in other parts of the country.

He urged Ndi Igbo to shift away from the post-civil war mindset of focusing solely on personal development while ignoring national politics. According to Kalu, remaining passive in political matters leaves the region out of vital decision-making processes.

?He urged leaders to establish a common political agenda, asserting that a unified stance would command respect and yield significant impact across Nigeria.

?The convergence, hosted by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma at the Government House, brought together prominent Igbo figures from politics, business, academia, traditional institutions, religious organizations, and youth groups.

Notable attendees included former Senate President and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim; immediate past Vice Chancellor of FUTO, Prof. Nnenna Oti; former Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Chief Simeon Okeke; former Ohanaeze Ndigbo President-General, Nze Ozichukwu Chukwu; alongside Chief Tony Chukwu, Amb. Greg Mbadiwe, Prof. Osita Ogbu, Mazi Sam Ohuabunwa, and Amb. Okey Emuche.
