?The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has announced the temporary closure of the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri to undergo critical runway rehabilitation works.

The shutdown, scheduled to take effect from October 20, 2026, for approximately 25 days, is aimed at enhancing operational safety and efficiency ahead of the peak Christmas travel season.

?The infrastructure project is a joint initiative between the Federal Government and the Imo State Government following consultations between Minister Keyamo, Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, and key South-East stakeholders.

The planned works will address deteriorated runway sections, treat surface cracks, fill potholes, apply new resurfacing, and carry out extension works designed to accommodate larger aircraft in the future.

?Passengers slated to travel through Owerri during the closure period are advised to reach out to their respective airlines for updates regarding flight cancellations, rescheduling, and alternative travel logistics.
