President Bola Tinubu has signed the NIMC Act 2026 into law, introducing a modern legal framework to strengthen Nigeria's digital identity system.
The new law positions the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) at the center of the country's Digital Public Infrastructure, enhancing secure identity verification, digital signatures, and online transactions.
It also strengthens data privacy protections, expands the use of the National Identification Number (NIN) for accessing key public and private services, improves governance, and imposes tougher penalties for identity theft and related offences.
The President said the Act will promote inclusion, protect vulnerable Nigerians, and support the country's drive toward a thriving digital economy.
