Defection Plan Sparks Outrage as YP, IPAC Oppose Bala Mohammed

By Ahmed Ahmed

The Chairman of the Youth Party (YP) in Bauchi State, Alhaji Kabiru Sani, has strongly criticised the reported plan by Governor Bala Mohammed to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the move as unhealthy for both his supporters and the broader political environment.

Sani made the remarks while addressing journalists on Friday in Bauchi.

He expressed concern over what he termed “political inconsistency” and its implications for democratic stability.

According to him, such a defection, if carried out, could erode public trust and weaken ideological clarity among political actors and voters alike.

He argued that Governor Mohammed, who rose to prominence under a different political platform, owes his mandate to the people who supported his previous affiliation.

“Switching allegiance at this stage sends the wrong signal to loyal supporters and creates uncertainty within the political space,” Sani said.

The YP chairman further alleged that the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), a body that fosters cooperation among political parties, has also withdrawn its support for the governor’s proposed move to the APC.

He maintained that political decisions of such magnitude should be guided by consultations and respect for democratic principles.

Sani urged political leaders to prioritise the interests of citizens over personal or strategic ambitions, stressing that consistency and accountability remain key pillars of good governance.

He added that political defections should not be driven by expediency but by genuine commitment to service delivery and national development.

Efforts to obtain official confirmation or response from the Bauchi State Government and representatives of IPAC were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.

The development, if confirmed, is expected to generate significant reactions across Bauchi State’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
