Edo Central Senator, Ekpa, Defends National Assembly's Position on Electoral Amendment

Senator Joseph Ikpea, representing Edo Central Senatorial District, has defended the National Assembly’s position on recent electoral amendments, supported the creation of state police, and called for sustained international cooperation to address Nigeria’s security challenges.

Speaking with newsmen in Abuja, the lawmaker emphasized that Nigeria’s security situation requires both domestic reforms and responsible global partnerships. He commended the Federal Government for strengthening ties with the United States in tackling insecurity, noting that even global powers rely on alliances during crises.

Referencing the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, Senator Ikpea pointed out that international conflicts demonstrate the importance of strategic support systems, adding that Nigeria should not hesitate to seek necessary assistance in confronting unconventional threats.

He clarified that extremist elements operating under religious identities do not represent the peaceful majority of Nigerian Muslims, stressing that religion should not be used to justify violence or criminality.

Electoral Act Amendment

On the controversy surrounding the Electoral Act amendment, Senator Ikpea defended the decision to allow both electronic transmission and manual backup of election results. According to him, while electronic systems enhance transparency, they are not immune to technical failures or cyber threats.

He explained that the dual approach ensures inclusivity for areas with poor network coverage and provides safeguards in case of system disruptions. “No credible system operates without a backup,” he stated, describing the Senate’s decision as practical and in Nigeria’s best interest.

Edo Central Erosion Crisis

The Senator also addressed renewed efforts to tackle erosion and ecological challenges affecting communities in Edo Central. He acknowledged that similar motions had been raised in the past but assured constituents that stronger follow-up with relevant federal agencies is underway to ensure measurable impact.

He expressed optimism that coordinated efforts between lawmakers and federal institutions would deliver lasting solutions.

Politics and Legislative Responsibilities

With elections approaching, Senator Ikpea dismissed concerns that political activities would distract lawmakers from governance. He maintained that legislative duties remain paramount and that the National Assembly can reconvene at any time to address urgent national matters.

Support for State Police

On constitutional reforms, the lawmaker reiterated his support for state police, arguing that localized security structures would enhance intelligence gathering, community protection, and rapid response to threats.

He concluded by urging Nigerians to remain patient and supportive of ongoing reforms, emphasizing that rebuilding institutions and stabilizing the economy require time, unity, and sustained commitment.
