The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Zamfara State Chapter, has called on lawmakers to urgently support and ensure the passage of the Special Seats Bill (HB1349), describing it as a critical step toward boosting women’s political participation and inclusive governance in Nigeria.
In a statement issued on behalf of the association, NAWOJ Zamfara emphasized that the proposed legislation, currently before the National Assembly seeks to address long-standing gender imbalance in political representation by creating additional legislative seats for women.
The association noted that despite women constituting nearly half of Nigeria’s population, their representation in elective offices remains disproportionately low, limiting their contributions to policymaking and national development. According to NAWOJ, the Special Seats Bill (HB1349) presents a practical and affirmative mechanism to correct this imbalance.
Adding that, Women have consistently demonstrated capacity, competence, andñ commitment across sectors. Supporting the passage of HB1349 willñ strengthen democracy by ensuring that women’s voices are adequately represented in legislative processes.
NAWOJ Zamfara urged lawmakers across the country to rise above partisan considerations and support the bill in the national interest, stressing that inclusive governance leads to more responsive policies, peacebuilding, and sustainable development.
The association also called on civil society organizations, traditional leaders, religious institutions, and the media to intensify advocacy and public enlightenment on the importance of women’s political inclusion.
NAWOJ reaffirmed its commitment to promoting gender equity, democratic values, and the empowerment of women through responsible journalism and sustained advocacy.
