The Speaker of the House of Representatives Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, Ph.D., GCON, has condemned the attack on the Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School (GGCSS) in Maga, Kebbi State, and the kidnapping of about 25 students by bandits.
Speaker Abbas described the attack, during which some officials were reportedly killed, as unfortunate, gruesome, and despicable.
Bandits had on Sunday night stormed the school, located in the Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State, and abducted the schoolgirls.
The Speaker, while lamenting the fate of the students in the hands of the abductors, called for a speedy response by security forces and the timely rescue of the schoolgirls.
While noting that schools should be among the safest places in the country, Speaker Abbas said the attack has severe implications and the trend must be checked by security forces.
The Speaker expressed confidence in the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security and intelligence agencies in rescuing the schoolgirls and apprehending the bandits.
Apart from restating the readiness of the House to assist the government in making life and property safe in Nigeria, the Speaker said education and welfare of young Nigerians are a top priority for the parliament.
Speaker Abbas, who sympathised with the families of the victims, prayed for their safe return to their respective communities.
