The Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd.), has received the International Mentoring Cmdt and Ambassador Alistair, of the Nationals in Diaspora Mentoring Corp (NIDMECORP), on a courtesy visit aimed at strengthening engagement between Nigeria and its diaspora communities.
The meeting focused on the role of Nigerians in the diaspora in supporting national unity, leadership development, security awareness and Nigeria’s participation in global policy and investment discussions.
During the engagement, Ambassador Alistair emphasised that Nigerians abroad remain committed stakeholders in the country’s future. He noted that diaspora communities aspire to a Nigeria that works for all its citizens; secure, inclusive and respected internationally.
He further stated that as several Western nations increasingly adopt inward-looking policies, Nigeria must equally strengthen internal cohesion while strategically collaborating with its diaspora as partners in advocacy, skills transfer, mentoring and international engagement.
Commandant Alistair explained that NIDMECORP is an international organisation involved in mentoring, training and advocacy, with a focus on developing leadership capacity and promoting responsible, values-driven leadership among emerging and established leaders.
In his remarks, General Musa thanked the delegation for the visit and for sharing insights drawn from international experience. He reaffirmed his commitment to the responsibilities of his office, stressing that Nigeria belongs to all Nigerians and that unity remains fundamental to national security and development.
The Honourable Minister highlighted that security is not only about safeguarding lives and property, but also about creating a stable environment that supports national and international investment. He underscored the role of leadership in fostering stability, cohesion and public confidence.
The discussion also extended to Africa’s broader challenges, with General Musa emphasising the need for stronger unity and coordinated leadership across the continent. He noted that fragmented strategies often slow progress and that leadership alignment is essential to improving the movement of goods and services and enhancing Africa’s global competitiveness.
Both parties agreed on the importance of sustained engagement between government institutions and diaspora-led organisations, recognising that nation-building is a shared responsibility that requires collaboration across borders.
The meeting concluded with a commitment to continued dialogue on how Nigeria’s diaspora can further contribute to national unity, security and leadership development initiatives.
