The Nigerian Police have reportedly arrested Abubakar Isah , a master’s student at Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBUL), Lapai, following a series of social media posts alleged to have criticised the administration of Niger State Governor, Rt. Hon. Mohammed Umaru Bago.
According to reliable sources, Abubakar Isah was picked up from his residence in Lapai and taken to the Police Headquarters in Minna on Thursday.
The arrest is said to be connected to online commentaries where Isah referred to the Governor as “Governor Amunike”, a satirical nickname popular among social media users to mock politicians perceived as underperforming.
The term, which originates from the name of former Super Eagles star Emmanuel Amunike, has evolved in online slang to symbolise leaders “kicking governance around without direction.”
Before his arrest, Isah had raised an alarm about unusual police activity around his lodge.
“There has been a suspicious move by two police officers this evening. They came asking for me at my lodge,” he reportedly wrote. “If anything happens before tomorrow, my roommate knows the officers who came. I only stand for the truth and will never back down.”
Isah, known for his strong online opinions, had recently published a Facebook post listing critical challenges affecting Niger State, including banditry, flooding, pension arrears, unpaid scholarships, and underfunded tertiary institutions.
In the same post, he acknowledged the state government’s infrastructural efforts but questioned what he described as the “slow pace” of project execution.
“We appreciate the ongoing road and bridge projects in Minna,” he wrote, “but why is the work so slow, and why has no one been completed till now?”
Efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Wasiu Abiodun, for comments were unsuccessful.
